Why an In-Person Visit to the Orthodontists is So Important

There are many companies offering mail-order clear aligner care, and the idea can be tempting, especially if you’re trying to save money and time. When you consider what’s missing from these types of services, however, you´ll realize that seeing a qualified orthodontist for your care is the best option for a healthy, functional, and beautiful smile.

Smile Direct Club is now closed, but there are plenty of copycat companies offering clear aligner treatment for people all over the country. They promise convenience, speed, and affordability, and it’s easy to understand why many people opt for that kind of service. And while it certainly does work for a select group of people with straightforward and relatively superficial alignment and bite issues, it can do more harm than good.

For example, mail-order treatments often move just the front teeth without correcting the bite. This lopsided approach could alter the way the teeth fit together and lead to abnormal wear and tear.

Exams and X-Rays

Orthodontists base a patient’s diagnosis and treatment on the findings of in-person exams and study of records such as x-rays. X-rays are a routine and essential part of orthodontic treatment. X-ray imaging can reveal hidden decay, root resorption, bone loss, and other conditions that might not be visible during a standard examination. Dental imaging also enables orthodontists to assess potential risks associated with orthodontic treatment, which is crucial for identifying problems and creating an effective treatment plan.

In-person visits are at the beginning of treatment for identifying root causes, and all through the duration of treatment. Orthodontists monitor the movement of your teeth to ensure everything is on track and teeth and gums stay healthy.

Saving a buck or causing complications down the line?

While at-home kits may seem like a more economical option, you’re putting yourself at risk for having to get more costly treatments in the future. Teeth move because the bone which holds them in place dissolves and reforms. This biological process is carefully guided, step-by-step, by an orthodontist who regularly assesses the health of your teeth and gums.

By the time you realize something with your at-home treatment is wrong, the damage may be beyond repair, even with professional help. Restoring lost teeth can be expensive and requires life-long maintenance.

An opportunity for human connection

Aside from the health-and-safety related reasons we mentioned previously, another benefit to seeing someone in-person for your care is the relationships you’ll develop with your orthodontist and the rest of the staff. The longer-term nature of orthodontic treatment means that you’ll be seeing each other over the course of at least months, if not a couple of years. Our member orthodontists often talk about that as one of the best parts about their jobs.

Not only do they get to help patients get a healthy and functional smile, but they become like family. In a world where our human interactions are increasingly done through a screen, seeing your orthodontist in person is a great chance to connect in real time.

When it comes to the health of your teeth and jaws, think of it as an investment in your future. It’s not always easy to part with your money, but keeping your teeth for your whole life and not having to use dentures in the future is a powerful motivator.
